Weekly Challenge: 7 Steps in 7 Days

This blog is about simplifying your life and taking control of your future so today I am offering up the first of my weekly challenges.    Let’s call it 7 Steps in 7 Days. (I’m going to do it too!)

1.  Identify 3 of  your biggest personal challenges.  Write them down.

Mine are organization (primarily clutter control),time management and teaching my children to be responsible for their stuff.

2.  Measure the impact of these challenges on your life.

3. Develop an action plan to address the most pressing issue.  Which of these problems causes you the most pain?

4.  Take 15 minutes every day to work on your action plan.

5.  Document your progress on your action plan.   Decluttering?  Take before and after pictures.  Hang ’em up!

6.  Once you have determined your problem is resolved, implement a “control” plan.  This is how you avoid falling back into the things that trap you in your challenge areas.

7.  Celebrate your success in a way that reflects the magnitude of the accomplishment.  Drop me a line if you need ideas here.  Remember we are managing our money and our time in good ways!

So my two biggest problems are time management and clutter.  I’m the self-proclaimed expert so I am going to work on those simultaneously.

Here’s your action plan template:

How will I celebrate success:

So for me, the clutter problem is worst in the Kitchen/ Dining Room area.  It is where I work most of the day and tends to be a dumping ground for newspapers, junk mail, school notes, etc.  Things get lost, things get damaged, balls get dropped in terms of due dates, deadlines, etc.  We often cannot find what we need when we need it and that is contradictory to me as a person.

So here’s my Action Plan:

Challenge:  Kitchen Clutter and Mess.

Impact: Cannot find what I’m looking for when I need it.  Forms do not get completed  on time, letters don’t get mailed on time.

How can I solve this problem (Action Steps):

1. Clean Kitchen

2. Organize cabinets to create a place for everything with everything in its place

3. Train the family on the new layout

How will I keep this problem from re-occurring (control measures):

Call me crazy, but I like visual controls.  I’ll be taking pictures of the finished project, laminating them and posting them inside each cabinet.  I will also put a copy of the pictures on a ring so that they are readily available for reference.  (and I’ll post to the blog of course)

How will I celebrate success:  I’m  hosting Thanksgiving Dinner at my house.  A lovely, stress free celebration with my family will be my reward.  I will also make an awesome centerpiece for the table.  Creativity makes me smile.  I will post pictures from that too, of course.

What about you?  If you need my special brand of kick in the pants, leave me a comment about challenge number one and I will be your chief cheerleader!  Any photo submissions of your achievements will get posted here!  We’re all in it to win it!
